Announcing the Grafana Plugin SDK for Rust
Hi everyone!
I've just released an initial version of the Grafana Plugin SDK for Rust, which provides a framework for building backend plugins using Rust, rather than Go. The Rust crate should support more or less everything that the Go SDK does, so can be used to write:
- data source plugins (especially those that need to connect to their data source over a non-HTTP protocol)
- streaming data source plugins - these stream data to Grafana over websockets to create more real-time dashboards, using Grafana Live
- app plugins, which need to provide greater interactivity than dashboards can provide (e.g. a custom UI, buttons, CRUD of resources, etc)
I've been using this SDK to work on a Grafana datasource for the Tokio Console (still WIP!) so it's seen at least some action, but contributions and feature requests are welcome. An example project is available to help get you started if you want to dive in.
Looking forward to any feedback if you decide to create a plugin using Rust!
Disclosure: I work at Grafana Labs (although not on the plugins platform team), but this isn't currently an officially supported SDK yet - hopefully soon, if we have some more devs willing to maintain it!
