Why choose Rust

Hello,

I’m senior Java developer with more than 14 years of working experience. During mu university time I used to used C and C++, then I start working with Java and almost all those years that was my primarily technology stack - Java and related frameworks and libraries like Spring, Hibernate … Also I was working for one company as a python developer for 1.5 year and for second company as a Elixir developer for one year. This is my background.

I’m thinking about learning another language and I tear down to Rust and Golang. Aim reasons why I want to learn something new are:

  1. Improve myself as a software engineer.

  2. Give myself possibilty that in future have option for better payed job. I’m satisfied with my current salary but it always can be better. Also please note, I live in Eastern Europe and there is no Rust jobs, while situation with Go is better and working remote can be problematic because our government require that we have at least two clients etc…

I read a lots of “rust vs go” topics, blogs etc and what I can conclude is:

  1. rust can be safer, it necessary if some library use unsafe
  2. rust should have better performance - that is not critical I think in for example backend api - usually DB is problematic.
  3. rust will give me option to become better developer while I learn it and use it - this is a main reason for this thread, I could not find more elaborate on this.
  4. rust compiler is so slow because of all checks - is really so painful to compile?
  5. with go it is more likely to be productive in shorter amount of time
  6. process of development - for example compiling is faster with go
  7. more jobs for go

Can someone who is using rust on daily basis to give me some overview about this - especially about points 3 and 4.

Thanks in advance.
