How to successfully convince my company to use Rust instead of C++ for a new project?
Hello everyone!
My company is starting to work on a new ambitious, multi-year multi-developer project. A little bit about it:
- It is going to be an RPC server
- It is going to interface with AWS services, possibly deployed there
- It may possibly interoperate with Ruby-on-Rails backend
- It may eventually involve low-level database / storage logic
- It will interface / share code with Web Assembly, and will need to serialize / deserialize a lot of data in an efficient way
My manager is mostly familiar with C++ and hired C++ developers, and the current plan is to develop in C++. However, it must be noted, they are quite open minded and have previously considered Rust, but chose not to for a few reasons:
- The existing coworkers' stronger familiarity with C++
- Existence of bigger infrastructure and libraries around C++
- Bigger C++ popularity and developer scene, easier to hire C++ developers, etc
Right now I am kind of given an opportunity to make my case for Rust, and I do feel strongly that Rust is a better, safer, more pleasant, more readable, more future-proof and just much, much nicer language in general. Even in terms of developer scene, I really believe things are going to change quite dramatically in favor of Rust in the upcoming years.
However, I am not usually great at expressing myself in a way that is convincing and successful. I want my colleagues to see the same benefits as I see - and really give a significant and hopefully approving consideration of Rust. What would you recommend in this situation? Would you recommend me to make a document, stating my case for Rust and how it will simplify the project, linking to resources, videos, talks, possible libraries for our project, etc? If so, I would really appreciate some resources that you think would be beneficial for me in this case, and especially resources that you have used successfully in a similar situation.
