A call for help - Cross-platform named pipes
I've been working on the ipipe crate for some time, and I've come to a point where I've realized the current implementation is simply broken. My goal was to provide an API for named pipes that allowed use in both Windows and Unix environments seamlessly. What exists here currently has too many caveats to be considered a considered a useful solution. A few unix and windows issues submitted by users have made me realize that the current API and implementation are fundamentally flawed. The API casts too-wide an umbrella over named-pipe features that behave significantly different on either platform, leaving various things broken on either side. Some people have used this crate with success, but it's all luck rather than soundness.
What I'm hoping for is to eventually be able to provide a lowest-common-denominator API that can give you equivalent behavior in either environment to the greatest degree possible given the limitations and restrictions of each. Eventually, I'd like features particular to either environment available within the appropriate cfg flag, but at this point the base cross-platform functionality is a higher priority.
I think this has potential to be a fairly useful tool for IPC, and the pieces are all there, but they're assembled in a way that's just wrong. This has been a hobby project for me and I haven't been able to devote a whole lot of time to solving it. If anyone out there thinking something like this would be useful, I'd be willing to spend some time dissecting what's there and what needs to be improved. This is my call for help on this project to anyone interested.
