Is there a useful application for str (not &str)?

I'm getting started with Rust and just like the rust book says, rustaceans commonly get stuck on strings. From the book:

Rust has only one string type in the core language, which is the string slice str that is usually seen in its borrowed form &str.

What would be the unusual case for str to be used?
