Are these misconceptions about rust?
Hey all, I am planning to write a small 2D game engine (not to be used professionally, haha) and I am evaluating 2 languages for the core engine, rust and zig. I have heard the following points about rust and reasons not to use it for game/engine development, and I am wondering if these points are true or false:
- Anything other than a ECS architecture for your engine in rust will be hard to implement with the borrow checker, and it will require lots of unsafe code.
- Getting rust to work on platforms without an LLVM backend is hard and could require porting the entire toolchain if the project doesn't use no\_std, whereas zig is easily portable to any platform with libc or musl (?).
- Compile times for rust are long (I mean I believe this to be pretty true)
- C interop in rust requires manually writing bindings or using bindgen, where as you can just pull a C lib and use it without much effort in zig.
I don't know much about rust, I have just heard this from around communities and am wondering if any of these reasons not to use rust for engine dev are valid.
Thanks all!
