Fluid simulation with adaptive particle sizes (master thesis)
Hi, I wanted to share the accompanying project to my master thesis about fluid simulations with adaptive particle sizes. The underlying simulation method is called Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH).
You can play around with it in your browser here.
Using adaptive particle sizes was able to provide a speedup between 2.7 and 15 in different experiments compared to equally-sized particles. Adaptive particle sizes are not that common in SPH fluid simulation research currently.
I was allowed to use the programming language of my choice for my master thesis (the institute uses C++). I found that Rust + Rayon + SPH is a match made in heaven. You can write all of the SPH algorithms concurrently without using unsafe code - therefore I'm very confident that there are no hidden data races in the program. Using Rust allowed me to easily build the WebAssembly version which is a nice bonus.
