Feedback needed from first low-level language learners of Rust
Hello Everyone,
As part of the Rust 101 Course that is being made to facilitate universities in teaching Rust, I am researching what would be needed to have a module that would introduce people to the basics of programming at the same time as learning Rust syntax. Rust is not a mature language when it comes to teaching it as a first language, and therefore not much material exists in this area. Therefore, I wanted to see if any people are learning / have learned Rust as their first language. Or whether there are Rustaceans coming from the high-level untyped programming world, who would like to share some experience when it comes to learning Rust.
There is a tracking issue for this module. There is already some content that is planned.
I am well-aware that Rust is also not seen as the most beginner-friendly language. Even by those in the Rust community. However, when talking to some professors who teach programming to first year's students, most agreed that the programming language has little impact on the understanding of the student.
Any anecdotes or experience is useful. Some specific points I am interested in:
- Did you combine learning low-level computer science concepts with learning Rust? How?
- What resources did you use? Did you do more exercises or more reading?
- What were specific pain points while learning? Why were those points difficult.
- How long did it take you to feel a bit comfortable with Rust?
Again, thank you very much for your input.
