Presenting Search, a GUI built on top of ripgrep.

search is a tool to recursively search file content, built on top of ripgrep engine, but with very useful additional features.

There is few reasons why this is a GUI, but it mostly boils down to the fact that GUI can keep more states between searches. This allow some interesting features.

  • Multhithreading search
    Just like ripgrep, but it's worth mentioning, because other tools exist (e.g., BareGrep, Sublime Text search feature, Notepad++ search feature), but they are all single-threaded and in my case, it was unusable on the size of project I'm working on.
  • You can have multiple tabs, a bit like in a web browser.
    This allow you easily execute other searches without loosing existing results.

  • You can open a search result in your text editor, directly at the right line.
    This feature is inspired by TotalCommander. If you double click, or use the hotkey F4, search will execute a command line specified in the settings, replacing the instance of {file} and {line} by the appropriate values. For instance, with Sublime Text, you can configure it as:
    "D:\Sublime Text\subl.exe" {file}:{line}

  • Much easier to search literal text
    You don't have to escape the string for the console, so it's very easy to include characters that are normally necessary to escape. For instance, ", \, /, |, and \^.

I don't invest much time in this project as I wrote what I needed and use it all the time. There is a lot of improvements possible and interesting features to implement, but maybe this tool will be helpful to you as well.
