Happily unemployed, but I can't find a job as a Rust developer. Many companies require "1-2 yrs commercial Rust experience"...

...am I shooting myself in the foot in pursuing other jobs at good companies, but in C++?

I like developing system software, and high-performance software, but I'm not a C++ expert, in fact, I spent the last year learning Rust hoping to pivot to a Rust dev role, rather than sharpening my C++ skills.

My rationale is that I'd like to be ahead of the curve as Rust becomes more and more used (and when "1-2 yrs commercial experience in Rust"' will become "5yrs commercial experience in Rust" ...) as well as I much prefer developing in Rust compared to C++.

I don't need a job \right now\ but it's probably better to be in the right industry environment with the right people I can learn from, and slowly move to a Rust dev with less pressure.

The downside is that I won't be able to study and do projects/OS full-time if I get a non-Rust job. I don't want to be heavily down-levelled down the line due to the lack of commercial Rust experience.

  1. Do I stick to my guns and not settle for anything other than Rust dev?

  2. Do I pursue my other stacks such as C++/Python (within similar domains), but at good companies, at least?

I'm in UK, the market is not as vibrant as in the US!
