Why do you enjoy systems programming languages?

Hello this is my first post ever on a programming related subreddit so I apologize for any mistakes in advance.

It's been almost 1 year and a half since I've started to get into learning and working in the computer science area, I've almost reached my 4 semester in college and I've started to question my motives about it all. The initial reason I chose to study computer science is because of my love and curiosity for linux and open-source, I haven't had the chance of learning operating systems yet but I am still very excited about the subject. The reason am making this post is because I want to learn more about systems programming and low level subjects but it feels like the overall industry just doesn't make it accessible to learn this on my own, it feels like for every 100 web js tutorials there is 1 systems programming tutorial and it's normally extremely complicated or just super specific about 1 niche topic, so I was wondering about every body else's experiences and storys, my real question is how do I start making projects that are impressive and complex, I've only managed to make simple cli tools and gui applications. What do you all recommend, am I trying to bite off more then I can chew?
