Announcing Velo - Your Rust-Powered Brainstorming and Note-Taking Tool

230 points staff_engineer

Hello everyone!

I want to introduce you to Velo, an open-source Rust application built with Bevy that aims to enhance your brainstorming and note-taking process. Velo takes advantage of the Bevy game engine and the rich Rust ecosystem to create what I think is a unique productivity tool.

Let me share some key features that make Velo special:

  1. Efficient Note Management: Velo keeps your ideas organized and easily accessible by storing them in a database, thanks to bevy_pkv and rocksdb
  2. Quick Search: Easily find specific notes with Velo's fuzzy-search feature, powered by tantivy. tantivy might have been a little overkill, but it was really easy to integrate.
  3. Flexible Document Handling: Seamlessly manage multiple documents and tabs per document, allowing you to switch between projects effortlessly.
  4. Markdown Support: Format your notes using markdown features (courtesy of markdown-rs) like bold, italic, ordered/unordered lists, and more, including syntax highlighting via syntect for code snippets. Text editing and rendering is built on top of cosmic-text.
  5. Visual Enhancements: Make your ideas come to life visually. Velo allows you to paste screenshots directly from your clipboard (thanks to arboard), enhancing your notes.
  6. Relationships and Mind Mapping: Explore the connections between your ideas by visually mapping out relationships. Velo provides tools for mind mapping, helping you visualize and organize your thoughts effectively.
  7. Shareable Links: Collaborate and share your documents effortlessly with others. Velo lets you generate shareable links, making teamwork easier.

Future Plans: In the next milestone, I plan to improve the user interface (UI) to provide a better user experience. Additionally, I'll be working on implementing collaborative editing support, allowing users to work together in real-time. Velo is already functional and has been useful for my personal needs. However, I believe it could benefit others as well. That's where your insights and contributions come in.

Velo is an open-source project hosted on GitHub https://github.com/StaffEngineer/velo. Take a look, give it a try, and let me know what you think. Your feedback and contributions are invaluable in shaping Velo into a great brainstorming and note-taking tool. If you're interested in contributing, here are a few areas where your help would be appreciated:

  • UI/UX Design: Help improve the user interface and create a visually appealing experience for Velo users.
  • Collaborative Editing: Join forces to implement real-time collaborative editing support, enabling multiple users to work together seamlessly.

Let's collaborate and build a tool that caters to all our brainstorming and note-taking needs. Together, we can make Velo an excellent productivity companion. I'm looking forward to your thoughts and contributions!
