LibertyOS is being developed again after around a year of hiatus, and we are looking for talented developers!
Hey there, everybody! My name is Daniel, and I began working on a hobby operating system nearly two years ago. It was through this hobby that I began to learn Rust, and as I continued to use Rust I found it to be really enjoyable for me.
I have been able to work on the kernel for the first time in a while, and I have been enjoying having evenings to work on this kernel. I am not able to do everything on my own, however. I need some help with several issues that the kernel is having, I have several ideas for features, and I am doing what I can to add functionality to the kernel so that developers can actually work with it.
I am almost finished with version 0.17.0. I have added some basic support for PS2-mice, I am working on incorporating a builtin JSON parser (useful for configuration and stuff), and a bunch of other features.
My long-term goal is to create a simple build system where the user uses cURL or something, downloads a script, and the script automatically detects what needs to be done in order to compile for the host's system. From there, it would download and set up Rust (using rustup), download the kernel, and build a file that can be written onto a USB device or used for a VM. I don't think that this goal is something for right now ("long-term goal"), but I never get to share some of these ideas, so I thought I would make use of this opportunity.
If you would like to help out with the kernel, head on over to the repository and open an issue or something, introduce yourself, and I will do my best to respond to you soon. The kernel has been featured on a Rust-themed podcast (Rustacean Station), but it is from December of 2021, so I don't remember what I said. I have heard that I represented the team well, but I didn't listen to the episode after it had been edited. Perhaps that episode would be a good place to hear a more detailed explanation of what the kernel will become.
I hope to meet some new friends from here. This subreddit rules, and it rules because of its members.
