Medical image retrieval gone blazingly fast and green
It is overlooked but highly relevant that software performance is implicated in its environmental impact too. At the research hospital I work for, I rewrote a Python component of our medical image retrieval system using Rust, improving the efficiency by 30-200 times (depending on how it's measured). Even though CPU time is plentiful and free for us, I'm nonetheless proud that these performance gains translate to lower carbon emissions: 1 kg CO2 saved (from about 2.9 kWh power consumed) per 126 GB of data processed.
