Questioning ThePhD's role in the RustConf drama.
I first came across ThePhD when I read his writing on the C standardization process. While I was very impressed by the technical content of his posts, I also could not help but notice the general tone of "these are bad/stupid people and I had to work so hard to convince them of my (implicitly presented as correct) solution".
Now, with the RustConf drama I totally understand why he would be upset, but I think his reaction has been, again, a bit extreme. Again, a lot of speculation about how there are some "bad people pulling strings".
This string of posts is what finally motivated me to make this post. He's basically dragging another open source maintainers name through the mud. When that open source maintainer then feels the need to make a response post (i assume because of all the negative attention), he of course creates a new "angry" post about how it's all just lies. No possibility given that the other guy isn't actually "bad" and maybe just miscommunicated/remembers things differently/wrote something quickly so he can get ahead of the shitstorm undoubtedly coming his way.
All in all, to me personally as an outsider (I work with Rust but am not in any way connected to the organization), it seems like the Rust community has been giving a lot of slack to someone who also engages in some, in my opinion, questionable or unkind behavior. I am open to any disagreements, and in fact would like to be proven wrong. Thank you for considering my opinion!
