Where in the language do you feel like more research should be made?

50 points nerooooooo

Hello! I'm a 3rd year CS student. I've been playing around with Rust for 2 years, and professionally working with it for 5 months. Next semester (starting in October) I'll be working on a research project and I'd like to do something Rust related.

Although as far as I know there are only a few professors in my uni who have heard of Rust, there are a lot of them interested in programming languages, functional programming, compilers, static analysis and other things that I think I could use as the central topic and then sneak some Rust in as the preferred language. Or just straight up do something very Rust specific, it'll likely be alright.

Some ideas I had were to study behavioral types, such as typestates and session types, or something related to the borrow checker and what it achieves especially in concurrent applications. But everyone and their mother has written at least a blog post on typestates and two articles on borrow checking, so I feel like those subjects really just scratch the surface and everyone kind of knows about them.

Do you guys have any other ideas of something interesting that I could research? Preferably something that's somewhat easier to get started with, and don't require a lot of knowledge/experience with the internals of the compiler (although I'd like to look into that as well, there might just not be enough time).

If you have an idea, I'll be glad to hear it! It can be super specific, but it doesn't have to be. I was told to think of topics of interest and I guess I'll get some guidance afterwards if all I have is just a starting idea.
