Switch career to rust

I’m a full stack developer (JavaScript unfortunately). I’ve been doing this for 6 years.

I did not want this career it was just the “easiest” option as i landed a job straight out of uni.

I have a computer science degree.

But I’m not using it.

I miss solving hard problems, fiddling with assembly, actually dealing with data structures other than JSON objects and arrays.

I’ve had this kind of mid life crisis today where I just do not want to get another React / Full stack role (I’m a contractor so I jump around a lot)

I want to work with rust and get paid for it.

I’ve been tinkering on and off with rust in my spare time for a few months now, and although I’m no expert. I feel like I’m proficient enough to build with it.

My question is - how does someone like me land a rust role, given my background is primarily Typescript?

Most applications I see require “real” backend languages like Java, C#, Go etc.

I feel like I would get laughed out the door applying for a rust position with my experience

I’m tinkering with FOSS rust projects and I have no plans to stop this.

I think maybe the best way is to build a bit of an open source portfolio of rust projects and go from there.

Thoughts?
