Makefile equivalent in Rust ecosystem
Context
I'm currently involved in a C++ project that deals extensively with DNA sequences. This project relies on GNU Make for various tasks. One of the task it provides is the ability to retrieve DNA files from an external website.
For example:
$ make fetch-dna-files
downloading files in samples/ folder
Users can then utilize these files to execute sample scenarios, perform benchmarks, and conduct tests using other "make" rules.
For example:
$ make test-samples
./my-program samples/*.txt
Problem
I would like to rewrite this project in Rust, but I am not so familiar with Cargo as I am with Make. Is it possible to declare these kinds of rules and targets ? Should I use a build script, a custom tool like cargo-make or something else ? What do you think ?
Note that the make rules I gave as examples above are not required to compile and run the programs. They are only called explicitly by the user.
