If C++ were safe, is there any point to Rust?

150 points Faranta

I last used C++ at the turn of the century in university, and was stunned to see how easy modern C++ has become, while watching Bjarne's talk on making C++ safe over the next few years - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eo-4ZSLn3jc.

There is automated memory management now, avoidance of null pointers, a simple standard library, and support for functional operations like map and filter.

In his talk, the creator discusses how he wants to make the language safe for memory, resources, and concurrency. Since C/C++ is already used for the majority of large open source apps, embedded systems, and operating systems, if it were safe too, would there be any point to continue developing or using Rust? I don't see it having many life-changing additional features.
