Rust is having a positive effect in C/C++
Whether Rust ever ends up suplanting C++ in the end, it is forcing C++ folks to think about better safety. In a recent talk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8UvQKvOSSw) Bjarne Stroustrup focuses on safety and some of the things that Rust does (RAII, fat pointers, ...), and argues for a "higher level" version of C++ that does not use raw pointers. But he acknowledges that people always reach for these low-level things. He also has a really nice catchphrase about 10mins in: "being careful" doesn't scale.
EDIT: There is previous discussion in r/rust that I didn't see - thanks @moltonel!
