Burn Deep Learning Framework in Rust: Year 2023 Recap
As we wrap up the year 2023, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the journey of Burn, a Deep Learning Framework built with Rust. Here's a recap of the milestones and transformations that defined our year:
Initial Project Announcement
We kicked off the Burn adventure with a humble announcement on Reddit just before the end of 2022. At that time, it was merely a passion project with a grand vision.
Growing Community Involvement
More and more passionate individuals joined the Burn community, bringing diverse skills and perspectives. The project's momentum began to surge as people became excited about the possibilities it held.
Full-Time Commitment
With the growing excitement and potential, I took a bold step and quit my job to focus on Burn full time. It was a leap of faith, but one that felt right given the project's trajectory.
Sharing the Journey
Throughout the year, I documented Burn's development journey through technical blogs on our website and Reddit posts. We started by sharing why Rust is a very good match for Deep Learning, then we explained in more detail how we use Rust ownership rules to manage tensor memory. We followed up with our WebGPU backend announcement, a backend requested by the community. Finally, we concluded the year with two technical blog posts about the technical details of the WebGPU backend implementation, sharing what we learned.
Formation of a Company
To ensure Burn could reach its full potential, I founded a dedicated company to support and drive the project forward. This move was crucial in aligning resources and expertise with the original vision I had for the project.
Heartfelt Thanks to the Community
None of this would have been possible without the incredible support from the community. Your feedback, contributions, and enthusiasm have fueled the project's growth and success.
Help Us Shape the Future
As we look ahead to 2024, we want your input! We've created a survey to gather your thoughts and insights, helping us better plan our efforts for the upcoming year. Your feedback is invaluable, and together, we can shape the future of Burn.
Thank you for being an essential part of this exciting journey. Here's to a year of growth, collaboration, and pushing the boundaries of deep learning with Rust!
