Actyx is now released as binary crate `ax`
We previously announced Actyx \[1\], leading to a lot of good questions and suggestions. The most prominent one: “why did you pick a name that is basically already taken?” We fixed that.
Since the announcement we worked tirelessly on making the crate structure more suited to publishing via crates.io \[2\]. And we used that opportunity to (re)name all crates around the new tool name ax. This was previously the name of the Actyx CLI binary, it consists of two cool letters, so what’s not to like?
At this point I’d like to shout out to Josh Cooper \[3\] who was so kind to hand over the ax (and derived) crate names he had previously reserved on crates.io — unfortunately I don’t know how to tag him here.
The result of this whole procedure: you can cargo install ax to get our beloved peer-to-peer event stream database onto your computer. Please try ax --help afterwards to find out more, or head towards the docs \[4\].
Our next plan is to work on the ax_core crate so that you can use it as a library, embedding an ax node in whatever application you’re writing. This will be particularly useful on Android and iOS, which are generally hostile to background services and much prefer to focus on the app that is in the foreground.
With this, we wish everyone a Happy New Year!
