I built my first application using Rust and I loved it

I am an embedded systems developer and I have wanted to try out Rust for a long time. I got some time off during this winter and started learning Rust. I took the following approach:

  • Rustlings (completed halfway)
  • Implementing data structures (got stuck at implementing a linked list for a couple of days but learned a lot)
  • Advent of Code (a third of the problems)
  • Developing a CLI tool (https://github.com/UtkarshVerma/rswal)

I've always found myself more suited to kinetic learning, so I could not finish the Rustlings and Advent of Code problems to the end. However, it was necessary to help me transition to Rust and enable me to develop an application.

What I liked about Rust is how easy it is to express my intent in the source code, and how it allows me to build complex and efficient applications in no time thanks to zero-cost abstractions. The strict error modelling of Rust introduced me to lots of new concepts related to things I thought I already knew. The distinction between OsStr and str is one of them. Rust also has good developer tooling around it and the package management makes it easy to quickly develop an application.

Although I still prefer C for embedded applications. For a control freak like me, having Rust in the systems programming domain is a boon for me and I'm pretty sure the next few software that I develop will be in Rust.

I would like to talk more about the software I wrote later on r/linux as it's not documented yet. There is also one more feature I wish to add and a couple of TODOs to solve before I release it.
