I made what might be the first rust project at my company
I just wanted to give an update on what I’ve been doing at my day job. I work for a large company and yet to my knowledge, I think I’m of the first projects that is starting to use rust. It’s just a database manager for CRUD operations running in a lambda function using Axum and cargo-lambda. It was no influence from managers, but they just left up to me to write the project. I decided to use Rust and it’s worked out great so far.
People seem to be kind of impressed with the fact that it builds to a single binary, which is easily deplorable, the binary is about 4 MB zipped, and that the function can run in typically less than 10 ms when hot. Even a cold start is about 70 to 100 ms. Other than that, the two other engineers on my team look at it and say “wow that’s really cool, but there’s a lot going on, so I don’t know if I wanna be in charge of it.”
As far as my thoughts, understanding serde to and from json and dynamo db Maps was a little bit difficult. Overall, it’s taking me about two weeks to get it to a point (not all day but tweaking it everyday and making it match a desired OpenAPI spec) where I feel like it’s pretty rock solid and it has good air handling without lots of duplicated code.
It’s nice to know that that part of our application stack just feels boring and will work.
Cheers!
