I convinced my team to try Rust by fixing the one thing everyone hated. Here’s the before/after.
We had this 900-line Python validation script that everyone ran daily. It took 6–8 minutes, failed randomly, and was impossible to debug. I pitched:
Two weeks later:
- Runtime: 6m 30s → 11s
- Success rate: 87% → 99.8%
- Code size: 900 → ~450 lines
The demo sold it — Rust finished before Python even started. Clear error messages and fearless refactoring sealed the deal. Our CI got faster, and the time saved already paid for the rewrite.
Lessons: Don’t pitch “memory safety.” Pitch “this annoying thing will stop being annoying.” Pick something painful, make it undeniably better, and let adoption happen naturally.
Now two teammates are learning Rust, and we’re rewriting another script next sprint.
