The mystical references of the borrow checker?

Old school C programmer here. I just started taking up Rust. Feels like C with someone (borrow checker) constantly minding my ass. (At other times - traits, etc. - feels a bit like Java - without the syntax monstrosity.)

So far so good. But then it seems everyone (transitioning, if that's a word in this context) has some beef with the borrow checker. And confusion.

I do not get it. The confusion. Is it because I happen to be a C programmer and everyone else came from ... JavaScript? Or will something come back to bite me later?
