Gaze - Facial authentication for Linux (written in Rust :) )

We built Gaze, a modern facial authentication system for Linux (Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch, etc.).

It's written entirely in Rust, which mattered here specifically because a PAM module runs as root and parses untrusted camera frames on every single login attempt. Also, it's, of course, very fast with authentication consistently less than 900 milliseconds.

We've been building Gaze for the past 5 months and it has matured to a point where we believe that it has become a solid replacement for older facial authentication systems like Howdy.

Now, instead of rambling on about the features (which is why we have docs!), here's some details about Gaze:

  1. Everything runs locally on your machine, so your face embeddings never leave your disk
  2. It has real liveness anti spoofing (MiniFASNet V2), so a photo or video of you won't unlock your machine, and if you've got an IR camera it can lean on that too for even stronger protection against spoofing attacks
  3. There's a GNOME Shell extension that handles native login and lock screen face unlock for GNOME users
  4. Hyprland users get dedicated Hyprlock support, and KDE Plasma and other desktop environments are covered too
  5. You get a clean native GTK4/Adwaita GUI for the point and click crowd, plus a full featured CLI if you'd rather script or tinker
  6. It's packaged natively for all the major distros, so installation is a single command whichever one you're on :)

You can install Gaze with our one liner

curl -fsSL https://gaze.gundulabs.com/install.sh | sh

or follow our manual instructions.
